Volleyball Earns Split on First Day at UW-La Crosse

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA CROSSE, Wisc. - The Bethany Lutheran volleyball team traveled to UW-La Crosse Friday night for the first two of their contests this weekend. They won the first match 3-0 over Ripon before dropping the second 3-0 to UW-River Falls. With the results the Vikings move to 2-6 on the season.

Bethany Lutheran 3 - 0 Ripon 

The Vikings started their day on the right foot, jumping out to an early 7-1 lead in the first set. Ripon would respond by going on a 14-7 run to take a 15-14 advantage, but Bethany started to gain control from there. A pair of kills each from Lex Morsching and Riley Sammon would push the Vikings to a 19-17 lead, and the team would hold that lead to the finish as they took set one 25-22.

In set two, the Hawks would respond to the Vikings strong first set and get out to a 15-7 lead to start the next. The Vikings cut the margin to 17-11 before going on a 6-0 run to even things up at 17. Ripon would again take a lead at 20-18, but the Vikings would use the service of Morsching to rattle off six straight points and take a 24-20 lead. The Hawks would score three staight points to cut the deficit to one, but a Maddie Meyer kill ended the set.

In the final set the Vikings fell behind again, trailing 10-6 in the early going . Eight straight points put them in front and they would hold onto that lead throughout the set before eventually winning it 25-21 to take the match.

Morsching shared a team-best 10 kills in the match with Lexiss Trygg who also added a team-high 18 assists. Maddi Wendland led the Vikings in game one with 16 digs, while Morsching added five service aces to her match. 

UW-River Falls 3 - 0 Bethany Lutheran 

In the second match of the night, the Vikings fell behind early as the Falcons jumped out to an 11-4 lead in set one and didn't look back. Bethany would fight late scoring three straight points to cut the deficit to five, but River Falls responded and closed out the set 25-19. 

The two teams played a tightly contests second set, going back and forth in the early going. With the Vikings clinging to a 15-13 lead, the Falcons would take seven of the next nine points to earn a three point lead and they would hold that momentum and take the set 25-20.

In the final set of the night, the teams played even the first six points before River Falls started to break away. Leading 16-14, they would score nine of the last 12 points to take the final set 25-17 and the match 3-0.

Rilee Hohbein had a strong match for the Vikings, with seven kills and no errors on 13 attempts for a .538 attack percentage. Trygg led the Vikings with 10 assists in the second contest while Wendland had a team-best 12 digs.

The Vikings are back in action tomorrow when they play Simpson at 11 a.m. before taking on UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m.
