New Ulm, Minn. - The men’s soccer team just got one step closer to the UMAC post-season tournament. The Vikings traveled to rival Martin Luther for an essential 4-1 victory that boosted them to third place in the conference.
The rainy and windy day proved to be a challenge as the Vikings got off to a slow start allowing Martin Luther to score in the 16th minute. The 35mph winds caused problems for both teams with the Knights outshooting the Vikings in the first half 20-4, then the Vikings outshooting the Knights 21-3 in the second half.
The Knights lone goal was off a corner kick with the wind pushing towards the goal. Keeper Cameron Koopman (Phelps, Wis./Phelps) tipped the ball, then it deflected off the head of a BLC defender into the post and past Koopman. The Vikings were down 1-0 at the half.
The squad regrouped with Joe Nuah (St. Paul, Minn./Arlington) scoring in the 51st minute assisted by CK Pock (Faribault, Minn./Faribault). Pock got one of his own six minutes later finding the back of the net unassisted. Pock wasn’t done assisting another goal by Evans Tackie-Yarboi (West Jordan, Utah/Cooper Hills) at the 77:56 mark. In the 84th minute Andrew Maas (Mankato, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) scored his first goal of the season finalizing the game 4-1.
