Mankato, Minn. – The Vikings hosted the Crown Storm in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener. Bethany came away with a victory in four sets.
Bethany fell to the Storm in the first set 23-25 despite having 13 kills compared to the Storm’s four. The Vikings could not find their rhythm on the court and committed 14 errors in the first set to open the door for Crown. BLC regrouped and came back to win the final three sets 25-11, 25-15 and 25-19.
Shelby Wiederhoeft (Truman, Minn. / Truman) was unstoppable putting down 24 kills in 42 attempts. She only had three attack errors earning a .500 attack percentage. Wiederhoeft was the go to offensive threat and pounded the last point for the Vikings victory. Katie Krieger (Blue Earth, Minn. / Blue Earth Area) had nine kills, Allie VanHee (Madelia, Minn. / Madelia) and Amanna Berthusen (Marshalltown, Iowa / Marshalltown) each had seven.
Emily Franzen (Lewiston, Minn. / Lewiston-Altura) set things up totaling 45 assists; she also led the team with five service aces. On defense Alyssa Fredrickson (Sanborn, Minn. / Red Rock Central) had 19 digs, Jesse Jurries (Trimont, Minn. / Martin County West) had 17 and Franzen had 15.
The Vikings had 84 digs compared to Crown’s 65. BLC had a total of 58 kills while Crown had 22.
The Vikings will host Minnesota-Morris tomorrow for another UMAC match-up at 1 p.m. Bethany is 2-12 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
