Box Score Opening Round Victory for Men's Soccer
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – In the opening round of the 2015 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament the Bethany men's soccer team took on the Rams from North Central. The Vikings entered the game as the number five seed with a record of 4-4-2 in conference. The Rams finished the regular season with a record of 4-5-1 and played as the number four seed in tournament.
Despite losing to the Rams twice in the regular season, the men's soccer team saved their best for the postseason as they took down the Rams by a final score of 3-0 to advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Freshman
Kenny Johnson (Otsego, Minn./Rogers) got the scoring started for the Vikings in the 41
st minute of play, scoring his fifth goal of the season, to take a 1-0 lead into half. To open up the second period of play,
Ryan Behmer (Salt Lake City, Utah./West Lutheran) extended the Vikings lead to 2-0. The final goal of the game came with three minutes remaining when
Brady Johnson (Rogers, Minn.) set up a beautiful pass to
Michael Loguercio (Tavernier, Fla./Coral Shores) who found the back of the net to earn a playoff victory for the Vikings.
The Vikings and Rams both attempted nine shots on goal.
Matt Bitter (Bemidji, Minn.) was the starting keeper for Bethany and earned the shutout victory with nine saves on the afternoon.
With the impressive road playoff win, the men's soccer team will now travel to St. Scholastica on Wednesday, November 4
th to take on the number one seeded Saints. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Saints Field. The semifinal winners will advance to Saturday's UMAC Tournament Championship game which will be played at the site of the highest remaining seed at 2 p.m. The league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament will be awarded to the 2015 UMAC Men's Soccer Tournament Champion.
