Box Score MANKATO, Minn. - After falling behind 1-0 in the early going of its season opener, the Bethany Lutheran men's soccer team scored four unanswered goals to move to 1-0 on the season.
"The exciting thing was that we came back and we're able to score some goals," said Head Coach Derick Lyngholm. "I think we left a lot of goals on the field tonight, there goalkeepers had some excellent saves, and there were a couple times I think we were too unselfish. The nice thing with our team is that you can see we have a lot of depth. The two times we switched our formation up and made substitutions we asked the subs to kick it up a notch and we were able to get goals right away which was good to see."
The Vikings got off to a slow start, committing a handful of offside penalties before Buena Vista was able to break free and net a goal to take a 1-0 lead. Bethany was quick to answer though, as Ben Klausen was able to play a loose ball off the outside of his right foot and into the top right corner of the net to even things at one. After a mass substitution and fresh legs, the Vikings were able to strike again, with Tomas Abreu playing one ahead to Gijs van Eldik who sent in a cross that Bryan Jaimes was able to knock home for a 2-1 lead. Antonio Lima then split the defense and took the BVU keeper by surprise to punch one past him for a 3-1 lead heading into the half.
After a stagnant start to the second half, Tomas Abreu was able to find the back of the net off a pass from Lima to get us to the final score of 4-1.
Nick Lundberg got the go ahead in net for the Vikings, notching one save while allowing a goal.
The Vikings are back in action Saturday when they head to Hamline for 1 p.m. kickoff.
