Volleyball Picks Up Sweep Over Buena Vista

Box Score STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Bethany Lutheran volleyball team Tuesday night took on Buena Vista and were able to come away with a win in straight sets 3-0. With the victory the Vikings improve to 6-5 on the season while the Beavers fall to 4-10.

It wasn't the start the Vikings were hoping for in this one, as the home team would race out to a 13-8 lead midway through the first set of action in Storm Lake. The Beavers would keep a healthy cushion until they committed four straight attack errors with both Abby Maloney and Maddie Meyer recording solo blocks in the run to even things at 18 all. The two teams would then go back-and-forth before reaching a score of 23 apiece, before a service error by BVU followed by a Lilly Mehrkens kill gave Bethany set number one 25-23.

After the second set started out 6-6 through the first 12 points, the Vikings would cruise to the finish line as they would score 19 of the last 23 points to claim the set 25-10. In the second, both Meyer and Lexiss Trygg would tally four kills in a set that saw Bethany tally 12 as a team. The Vikings also had five service aces in the set, with Esther Peeters recording three and Maddi Wendland two.

Bethany would quickly carry their momentum from the second set into the third, as they would take a commanding 15-5 lead in the early going. The home team didn't quit easily though, as they would go on a 13-3 run to even things at 18. After the teams traded a few points BVU would then make a run to take a two point lead late and force set point at 24-22, before a Meyer kill and BVU error evened things at 24. The teams would then trade points and go to extras at 26, with the second setter dump kill of the set from Abby Distad giving Bethany match point before an unforced error by BVU would end the match.

Mehrkens finished with a team-best nine kills for Bethany while Meyer finished with eight to go along with four solo blocks. Distad would divvy out a26 assists in the contest while both Megan Wegner and Wendland finished with double digit digs with 26 and 17, respectively.

The Vikings now have a few days off before they're back in action on Saturday for a pair of contests at the UW-La Crosse Invitational.
