Men's Golf Wins UNW Invite, Women Take Fifth

ST. MICHAEL, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran men's golf team won the UNW Invite on Tuesday at Fox Hollow Golf Club, while the women finished fifth. The Viking men carded a six-over par 290, seven strokes fewer than second place Northwestern-St. Paul, and the women totaled a 466.

The men's score of 290 set a new program record for an 18-hole team score. The previous mark was 295 at the Martin Luther Invite on Sept. 12, 2012.

Keaton Ginter shot a two-under 69 to tie for medalist honors with Northwestern's Carson Besonen, but finished in second after a scorecard playoff due to their scores on the top handicap hole (No. 7). Matthew Olmanson tied for third place, just one stroke behind Ginter at one-under 70. Anthony Nicolai carded a four-over 75 to tie for 10th, and Tyson Wicklund tied for 13th with a 76. August Waxin was the top Viking individual outside of the top group of five, finishing in a tie for 17th at 77.

Lydia Schmid led the Viking women with a 21-over 93, tying for 19th place. Flora Wegner tied for 23rd with a 96, while Kennedy Halper took 38th at 124 and Brianna Lienig finished 40th with a 153.

"I'm proud of the way the whole team battled through rough weather to start the event and that all players made progress on the course with their mental preparation and process," said Head Coach Mitch DeKruif. "I'm also proud of the varsity men for setting a new school scoring record and winning the event, and proud of the ladies for finishing fifth in the event. Now we go back to work as we prepare for MLC on Thursday."

The Vikings are back on the course Thursday at the New Ulm Country Club against Martin Luther.
