Michael Butterfield graduated from Bethany Lutheran College in 1966 where he lettered in baseball and soccer. Butterfield returned to Bethany in 1971 and began coaching soccer in 1972. While coaching Bethany soccer, Butterfield was Region XIII Coach of the Year 11 years and NJCAA Coach of the Year runner-up in 1981. During his 13 years of coaching at Bethany, his teams accumulated 173 wins, 46 losses, and 12 ties; were Region XIII NJCAA Champions 11 years and placed third nationally in 1973.
After leaving Bethany in 1985, Butterfield went on to Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he served two years as Director of Admissions and eight years as Director of Development. He is currently Vice President of Resource Development at Concordia University in Austin, Texas. Butterfield helped to start intercollegiate men’s soccer at both colleges and coached part-time in non-recruited programs for 10 years. He was voted Lake Michigan Coach if the Year in 1994.
