Pamela Sue (Niermann) Goebel graduated from Bethany Lutheran College in 1981 where she played both volleyball and basketball. Her accomplishments in both sports were noteworthy. During the 1971 volleyball season, she recorded most attacks, most points served, and was voted Most Valuable Player. In the 1980 volleyball season, she was the team’s leading spiker, leading server, and was again voted Most Valuable Player. In the 1980-81 basketball season, Goebel was Bethany’s leading scorer, with a high of 49 points in a single game. She recorded 27 rebounds in a single game. This level of performance earned her the Most Valuable Player title amongst her teammates, as well as elections to the NJCAA All-Region XIII Basketball Team and NJCAA Second Team All-American. The 1980-81 Bethany Women’s Basketball team took the conference championship and played in the state championship game.
After Bethany, Goebel went to Central Michigan where she studied physical education and played basketball on a full scholarship. Her team went to the NCAA tournament her senior year.
