Originally from Suttons Bay, Michigan, “Slug” Guldberg attended Bethany Lutheran from 1937-39. He was a post-graduate student from 1939-41 and lettered in both basketball and baseball. In 1939, as a right-handed baseball pitcher, Guldberg led Bethany to it’s first-ever SMJCC (Southern Minnesota Junior College Conference) title in any intercollegiate sport. The sophomore highlighted the season by striking out 16 of 38 batters in a 3-2 in over Concordia-St. Paul in the second-to-last game of the year. In 1940, Guldberg threw a no-hitter against Waldorf College.
On the basketball court, Guldberg (a center) set the Bethany single season scoring record with 102 points in ten conference games for the 1937-38 season. He totaled 182 points for the season. Guldberg bettered that a year later with 140 points in 11 conference games, 177 total points for the season. He was named to the first-team SMJCC All-Conference squad for the 1939-40 campaign.
